DANE'S PLACE

Dane's Place

WHAT IS “DANE’S PLACE” ?

Dane’s Place is a shelter home for families that need safe, temporary housing and the space and time it provides to get their lives back on track and successfully mainstream back into the community.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF “DANE’S PLACE” ?

In the spring of 2005, Bethlehem Lutheran Church had the opportunity to purchase a private residence that adjoined the Church parking lot. The house was an empty structure looking for a vibrant purpose. That purpose became the impetus that formed the Bayport Shelter House Commission which consisted of the community’s three churches – Bethlehem Lutheran, People’s Congregational and St. Charles Catholic Church.

Dane’s Place was formed initially to provide temporary housing for families displaced by hurricane Katrina. The long-term goal is now two-fold: to provide transitional housing for families in crisis and to actively assist these families in ways that help them become independent and productive in the community.

HOW DID “DANE’S PLACE” GET ITS NAME ?

The home was named in honor and memory of Dane Johnson; a young Marine Reserve who grew up in Bayport, was active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was personally involved in the support of others in need. Dane was killed in a motorcycle accident in August of 2005 prior to being deployed for active duty in Iraq.

Dane grew up in this community and responded to the call to share with others less fortunate.

We seek to do the same.

HOW ARE “DANE’S PLACE” FAMILIES CHOSEN ?

Families considered for Dane’s Place typically reside in the St. Croix River Valley area, are pre-screened and recommended through Washington County Human Services and personally interviewed by the Dane’s Place Board of Directors. Once pre-approved, final background checks are made through the Bayport Police Department.

Upon final approval a covenant/contract is prepared and signed by the family, a needs assessment is determined and the family is assigned a “host” to assist in getting the necessary support services that are available in the St. Croix Valley area.

HOW LONG CAN FAMILIES STAY IN “DANE’S PLACE” ?

Dane’s Place families can stay up to one year, but are encouraged to take advantage of available services to get them back on their feet and mainstreamed back into the community as soon as they are able.

While in residence the families are expected to be responsible for some of the basic maintenance of the home (lawn mowing, snow removal, watering shrubs, etc.).

In addition, the families are required to assume some minimal financial responsibility based upon their income and ability to help offset operating expenses.

Typically, a portion of the funds from the family’s financial contribution to Dane’s Place are set aside in an escrow account that, along with furnishings that the family is allowed to take with upon leaving, will help make a fresh start and new life for the family.
